Eric Bailly said he want to know his stand & United future and demand talk with Mourinho
Man United star Eric Bailly is unsure about his long-term future at the club
and has been left disappointed by Mourinho’s recent treatment of him, we
understands.
The Ivory Coast international was one of the few senior players available to Mourinho for the club’s pre-season tour of the United States and was praised by the Portuguese coach for playing through the pain barrier in a defeat against Liverpool in Michigan.
Bailly started the season as first choice alongside Victor Lindelof for the 2-1 win against Leicester but was dropped following a dismal performance against Brighton the following week.
While Bailly accepts his display was nowhere near the required standard against the Seagulls, it was reveal the defender has felt marganilsed by Mourinho ever since and believes he’s had to shoulder the blame for United’s poor start to the season.
Bailly was not
included in the matchday squad for the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham the following
week but Lindelof, his centre-back partner in the defeat on the south coast,
was handed a reprieve and replaced Phil Jones shortly before the hour mark. The
Swede was then a starter against Burnley, while Bailly was handed a cameo in
stoppage time against the Clarets.
Bailly made just one
start in United’s final eight matches of the season and was dropped completely
after the Red Devils’ 3-2 win away at Manchester City in early April. Mourinho
was questioned on whether Bailly was being frozen out but bizarrely claimed
that he felt duty-bound to play those United players that would be involved in
the World Cup.
Bailly is happy at the club and has settled in Manchester since his £30million move from Villarreal in 2016 but the Ivorian wants to discuss where he stands with Mourinho before making any long-term decisions on his future.
Mourinho was desperate to sign a centre-back in the summer and
felt let down by Ed Woodward for his failure to recruit a world class defender.
With Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Lindelof also at
Mourinho’s disposable, Bailly is understandably concerned about his chances of
first-team football and he will analyse his options in January if his situation
does not improve. Bailly is a popular figure in the Old Trafford dressing room
and is out of contract in 2020.
