Good: Boss Guardiola to keep winger as Man City set Sane contract talk

Pep Gardi is determined to keep Leroy Sane at the Etihad with club officials working on a new contract for the German

The winger is yet to start a Premier league match this season and was dropped from City’s squad for the 2-1 win against Newcastle United.

Sane was a surprise omission from Germany’s World Cup squad and, while Guardiola has downplayed question marks over the 22-year-old’s attitude, the Spaniard was unhappy with Sane’s application throughout pre-season and has seen little improvement in the early weeks of the campaign.

Nevertheless, there is an appreciation from the club that Sane is a unique talent and Guardiola doesn’t doubt his long-term future in the north-west.

Sane earns around £65,000-a-week and can expect a modest improvement on a new deal at the Etihad. The club recently handed new long-term deals to both Ederson and Gabriel Jesus, despite the fact that both players had a comfortable amount of time left on their existing deals.

Sane has been reinstated to Germany’s squad for their Nations League clash against France this week but team-mate Toni Kroos has told the winger to improve his body language if he’s to fulfill his potential. ‘Sometimes you have the feeling with Leroy’s body language that it is all the same whether we win or lose,’ said Kroos. ‘He has to improve his body language.

He’s a player who has everything you need to be a world-class player but sometimes you have to tell him he has to perform better.

‘He was fantastic for City last year but Pep has the same problem at the moment – he’s trying to get the best out of him so he can perform better. If he performs, he’s a real weapon, honestly. He has the quality especially for us, but maybe the head coach looked at his performances for the national team and wasn’t happy.’
