Most Seen: Sarri's brings out the best in Hazard, Kante, Rudiger & Kavacic
The 2016/17 Premier League title winner changed Chelsea’s
approach dramatically when he opted for a three-man defence soon after
arriving.
That system proved hugely successful for the Blues as the
club set a blueprint for many others to follow. Chelsea and Conte ultimately
parted ways this summer, though, and Sarri has returned to a 4-3-3 formation.
Centre-half Rudiger is one player who has established himself as
a member of the first XI this term. And he has helped Chelsea win their opening three league games against
Huddersfield, Arsenal and Newcastle.
The Blues have scored eight goals so far, picking up the
maximum nine points with Bournemouth at home to come before the first
international break.
And the likes of N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Eden
Hazard look to be flourishing due to the new tactics.
The trio shone at Newcastle as Chelsea dominated possession and
controlled the game in the hosts’ half throughout.
Asked what is different to playing under Conte, Rudiger
told ESPN:
"Stop comparing. I don't want to speak about the past. As you can see, we
do a lot of ball possession and try to press high.
"For [the attacking players], it's good because we
mostly have the ball. It's good for those players. To make those players defend
is not their strength, especially Eden.
“But players like N'Golo [Kante] and Mateo [Kovacic] are a
good mix.
“Those two players can attack and also defend as well.
"At the end of the day, the three points are more
important because the performances will come definitely.
"If I [look at] this game and the game against
Arsenal in the first half and the last 20 minutes, we're improving.”
It took a scrappy late own goal from DeAndre Yedlin to
earn Chelsea a 2-1 victory at Newcastle.
But on winning with just three minutes to go, Rudiger added:
”That's a good sign. It meant we are ready -- it was a difficult game but in
the end, with a bit of luck, we fully deserved this win.
“But if you saw the whole game, I wouldn't say that it's
luck.
"Game-by-game I think it's getting better and that's
our target. Before the internationals, we'll try to win all of our games and
then come back after and go on."
Real Madrid loanee Kovacic, superstar forward Hazard,
World Cup winner Kante and Germany international Rudiger are all expected to
start at Stamford Bridge for the visit of high-flying Bournemouth on Saturday
(3pm).
