News: See Herrera speaks on Mourinho's tactics against Tottenham
Ander Herrera claims Jose Mourinho got his tactics spot on during last night’s damaging 3-0 defeat against Tottenham at Old Trafford.
The Manchester United manager made six changes from the team which lost at Brighton the previous weekend, switched to a 3-5-2 formation and deployed Herrera as a makeshift centre-half.
Mourinho’s gameplan worked during a first
half in which his side stifled Tottenham and created the clearer goalscoring
opportunities and would have led at the interval had Romelu Lukaku not missed
an open goal. United, however, failed to recover from Harry Kane’s 50th minute
opener with Herrera badly at fault for the first of Lucas Moura’s two goals.
It’s
difficult to swallow a defeat like this when you take on the game as we did and
when you have as many chances as we had tonight. We need to keep putting the
work in and the results will come.
‘It’s easy to
understand what happened,’ Herrera told reporters after the game. ‘When you
have 16 or 17 attempts, when you have so many opportunities to score in the
first 60 or 70 minutes and you don’t do it, the opponent can score.
‘The
opponent can hurt you. They did it – they scored from their first corner – and
what can we say? ‘I think the commitment, the approach, the attitude, the way
we faced the game was perfect. ‘We didn’t let them build – one of the things they
do well is building up and we didn’t let them do it.’
